Emergency Special Session: The Suez Crisis
CHAIR: Akshat Agarwal
CO-CHAIR: Andrei Iosifescu

The year is 1956, and the Cold War grows ever hotter: Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser’s efforts to play East against West have finally come to a head. A new arms deal with Czechoslovakia has granted Nasser access to destabilizing weaponry, while bringing him closer to the Soviet bloc. Even more worryingly, he has seized and nationalized the Suez Canal, which was heretofore operated by Britain and France. Fearing Nasser’s expansionist ambitions and shipping blockades, Israeli forces have since invaded Egypt, a move that some suspect was emboldened by conspiratorial European support. Utterly paralyzed, the United Nations Security Council has delegated its authority to an unprecedented Emergency Special Session of the General Assembly, where you meet today. Your Excellencies, the fates of the Cold War and a centuries-long colonial era lie in your capable hands.
